BEIJING 2008 Paralympic Games

My Swimming Update

My first international meet was the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece. I stayed in the Olympic Village with athletes from all over the world. I was encouraged by seeing so many people that were determined to do their best despite their disabilities.

I competed in the 2006 World Swimming Championships in Durban, South Africa. I won nine gold medals and set five world records. It was a really fast meet and many of my friends also broke records. I was honored to represent the United States at this prestigious competition. >more...

The first time I ever set a record was in January 2004. In my first swim meet of the year at Calvert Hall College High School, I broke five American records. I continued setting national records at University of Maryland Baltimore County and the U.S. Naval Academy. I also set records at the London Aquatic Center and Open Championships in Minneapolis. Currently, I hold 34 American records, 17 Pan-American records, 14 world records, and two Paralympic records. See the complete list.

I’m in my 6th year of competitive swimming and having an amazing time. I’m very excited about winning gold in the Paralympics & World Championships and traveling around the United States as a member of the U.S. Paralympics Elite Team.

The Paralympic swimming events are open to athletes with all types of impairments and, while competing, no prostheses or assistive devices may be worn.

Most of the time, I train and compete right alongside able-bodied kids. All of the USA Swimming affiliated teams have adapted policies that allow swimmers with a disability to compete.

In an effort to educate members of the swimming community about inclusion, they have written: Including Swimmers with a Disability: A Guide for Swimmers and Parents.

My local swim team is Merritt Athletic Swimming which trains at the Merritt Athletic Club in Towson, Maryland. For more information contact Coach Andrew at abarranco@merrittclubs.com or 410-254-0267.
